A strange phenomenon?
A different post this time. It’s an open question.
I receive a number of emails each day which are useless to me. SPAM. You know what I mean, we all get some. But, recently, I’ve noticed some strange things with the spammy emails that I get.
More and more of them are containing quotes from books to a greater or lesser degree. I even got one the other day that was ONLY a quote from (I think) Steven King. I actually quite enjoyed it, but it was a shame they cut it off mid paragraph. Presumably they forgot to put in the spam. oops… but anyway, I digress…
What I’d like to know is, why do they put these in? Is it to negotiate a spam filter? Surely the people sending the messages realise that one look at the subject is enough for me to hit “delete”?
I regularly get emails pertaining to be from banks I don’t even use. Often poorly spelt, these messages come in HTML form with links to sites that don’t belong to the financial institution in question. I checked out the source code on a couple of these. Guess what? They had quotes hidden in the source code, which wasn’t even visible to the ordinary reader. What on earth was it there for?
Answers please.
I’m particularly looking for imaginative guesses. Though a legitimate answer would be much appreciated.
