Amazon Kindle - The Future of Reading?

For ages now, we’ve all been saying that there will come a time, and a device, that will see us reading content and news straight from a device, and the old paper format disappearing.

There have been several limitations to this, however, namely that:

  • People don’t like reading from screens;
  • People don’t want another expensive (and pickpocketable) electronic item; and
  • Many of us enjoy using books and newspapers!

However, I was amazed to discover the new Amazon Kindle product this week, which has been selling out rapidly over in the states. This electronic device, priced at just short of $400 USD (so under £200) allows the user to purchase and read books, newspapers, and even blogs on their own handheld device.

But what of those of us who find staring at screens all day hurts our eyes?

Apparently this machine has a different screen technology, which makes it equivalent to reading from paper.

Its a wireless device, which allows you access to the latest content and stories from wherever you are - though it doesn’t just provide that by traditional wi-fi which can be troublesome to connect to at the best of times - no, rather the Kindle uses the same network that modern mobile phones are using, which provides immense coverage (I think Amazon call this whispernet or similar).

In any case, as soon as I can get hold of one of these on our shores, I will, and I’ll let you know how well it goes.

In the meantime, those of you who are stateside can buy (or, rather, pre-order) the Kindle from Amazon by clicking the banner below.
