John Howard to Call Australian Election

After a year which has seen Kevin Rudd and John Howard spend most of their time electioneering, at last they can finally do this out in the open, with a clear date in mind.
John Howard today flies to Canberra to meet the Governer General and formally request an Australian Election.
You heard it here first.

Australian Irony

Australian Irony

Who says Australians can’t do irony? Not me.
We were sitting waiting peacefully for the train to arrive at Coorparoo Station in suburban Brisbane when the man opposite us began to behave in what could only be described an ironic way. Don’t believe someone can behave ironically? Check out the picture we got to prove it…

Essential Australia - Island Sunset

Essential Australia – Island Sunset

As we cruised back in a little tinny boat, from a secluded beach on Great Keppel Island that we had all to ourselves, the sun set over another small island. I got this photo.

National Walk to Work Day – Friday October 5th

This Friday, 5th October, across Australia, it is “National Walk to Work Day.”
Following my articles on Climate Change, and reflections on the Sydney Earth Hour event, as well as my follow up article on Australian Car Culture, I feel that I cannot let this event pass unnoticed.
I heard about Walk To Work Day in the [...]

Essential Australia - Wildlife - Snakes

Essential Australia – Wildlife – Snakes

We encountered this snake in the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland while walking around a lake. It was second time we saw a snake in Australia, however, the only time we managed to have the camera out before it slithered away.
I used the zoom on the camera rather than getting too close! As I did, [...]

Saturday 18th August - Mount Isa to Wauchope

Saturday 18th August – Mount Isa to Wauchope

Today we crossed the state border between Queensland and the Northern Territory. Almost immediately we became aware of the nothingness of the NT tableland. Long sandy grass and occasional trees stretch for as far as the eye can see and careful planning has to go into fuel stops. At one point we spotted a feral [...]

Friday 17th August -Normanton to Mount Isa

On yet another mammoth driving mission, we stopped at Burke and Will’s Roadhouse at the crux of the Savannah Way and the Matilda Highway. The last thing we expected to stumble across was a rodeo in full swing. I could hardly stifle my giggles as men in Stetsons and spurs clinked across the road for [...]

Thursday 16th August –Ravenshoe to Normanton

This was our first long, straight drive and at around 600 kilometres it was enough to keep a chiropractor in business. We had no mobile phone signal throughout and whilst succumbing to the myth taught to every overseas traveler –“You need to check under the toilet seat for redbacks when you use an outback dunnie” [...]

Crystal Cascades and the Skyrail

We arrived near Cairns on Tuesday 14th August and stayed near the Crystal Cascades waterfalls. They are beautiful but reached by a rather ugly concrete path surrounded by stinging trees. Fish are clearly visible from 20ft up.
The skyrail is an eco-friendly cable car that runs through several kilometres of rainforest. We shared a cable car [...]

Thursday 26th July –Noosa Heads Day 1

We drove straight to Noosa Heads after picking Anna up from the backpacker’s hostel. In the evening we visited the YHA for drinks. The YHA in Noosa Heads has a pleasant balcony, a piano in the living room, a bar and comfortable sofas for those who venture out of their dorms. It is also only [...]
