Edinburgh Raft Race 2009

The 2009 Edinburgh Raft Race took place on Saturday 27th June at 11am. On a warm but rainy morning, four teams took to the waters of the Union Canal at Edinburgh Quays with only milk cartons, oil drums and ballons to keep them afloat. To the tunes of the eighties blasting out over the tannoy, and with several hundred onlookers, the teams battled it out with makeshift paddles until one catamaran-style pallet raft broke away from the scrum to win an outright victory for the year.

There were food stalls, crafts, boat rides and charity stands at the Union Canal. Bunting adorned the Quays and many of the competitors took part in fancy dress, including one man dressed in a wedding dress complete with veil. This race takes place every year and is always a popular community event.
