Eulogies, Hypocrisy and Jeremy Beadle
I noted with interest yesterday the reaction to the death of Jeremy Beadle.
A couple of months ago, we featured the “Eulogy Song” from Chaser’s War on Everything which suggests that even bastards become heroes after death. While I’m in no way saying that Jeremy Beadle was a bastard, not at all, it was funny to watch the reaction on Richard & Judy yestereve. Richard tread carefully around the subject in his befuddled way, and made sure everyone knew what a thoroughly nice chap he considered Beadle.
‘Oh really,’ thought I, ‘why hasn’t he been on your show in the past five years??’
An even better example of the back-tracking that occurred when Jeremy Beadle died is this facebook group.
You can literally spot the time people became aware of Beadle’s death - if you can’t be bothered finding it, it goes something like this:
Student 1: Ha Ha Ha, Beadle has a small hand!
Student 2: Hee Hee Hee, and curly hair!
Student 1: Yes, doesn’t he, Beadle is a dwarfish foolhardy chap!
Student 3: Erm, he’s just died you know
Student 2:Â what? Dead, dead?
Student 3: yep
Student 1: Beadle was an awesome guy, and would have been my mate.
Student 2: I concur, Jeremy Beadle should be beatified post-haste.
Ok, so it wasn’t quite like that, but you see my point. He was a light entertainer, and good at his job. A likable character. It is a shame he died. But why stop the jokes, I mean, it isn’t as if you were bothered if he ever read them in your public group when he was alive (and imminently more able to take great offence).
Death, it would seem, is the only taboo.

Jeremy Beadle was a little more than a light entertainer and good at his job! He was an extremely charitable man who dedicated much of his adult life to very good causes! Those who decide that his hand is the most significant part of him are laughably ignorant!
