Get a Job?
I cast my mind back to the weeks before we set off, when I was speaking to a good friend of mine, Charlie, and recall his parting words:
“Don’t get a job. Whatever you do. Jobs are for losers.”
I know what he meant.
Anyhow, on the topic, I found this site, which echoes a few of my thoughts on the subject. However, it is based around not getting a job and instead beginning a web-based business or similar. I’d like to do more than just that: but my teas ready so I’ll finish this later…
Ok, I’m back from the 4 day tea break to continue along this vein.
The main reason I don’t want a job will become more obvious as The Big Project gets underway, however, for now it will do for me to say that much of our western society has, at its very root, the pursuit of shallow goals as an underlying concept. For example, getting a “good job” and earning a lot of money are seen as important. Finding something fulfilling and which makes one truly happy appear to be far lower in the list of priorities.
This would suggest, then, that I don’t believe money brings happiness. A fairly cliched sentiment I know, but it is one which is mostly true. Money does, however, provide us with far more options: to travel; to eat [nice] food; to go to art exhibitions etc etc etc, all of which will makes us (me) somewhat happier.
What I mean to say is therefore this: getting a job and any amount of money will not make me happy… in itself… I would contend that it will not make anyone happy, but that is not something I’m prepared to say at this juncture.
As I have such a great many problems with the state of the world, and the economic situation which evidences a general lack of caring, at best, or, at worst, a wanton stifling of growth to benefit those who “have” at present, why then would I wish to be an actor in such a market by adding my talents to the list of this which are exploited by it?
Which brings me to one of my biggest concerns: those who know there are systemic flaws and yet do nothing… but, alas, my dinner awaits…
