Happy Rakhi!
Raksha Bandan is a Hindu festival which celebrates the bond between a sister and brother. The sister ties a coloured bracelet around her brother’s wrist and he gives her a monetary gift in appreciation. The bracelet is often blessed in some way beforehand and the brother is supposed to protect his sister in return for the blessing that the bracelet brings.
Women also tie bracelets around the wrists of the Prime Minister and soldiers.
Raksha Bandhan festival is celebrated every year on the full Moon Day of Shraavana (July-August) Month. Over the next few years, the Rakhi festival will be held on different dates:
Raksha Bandhan in 2008 is on Saturday, the 16th of August.
Raksha Bandhan in 2009 is on Wednesday, the 5th of August.
Raksha Bandhan in 2010 is on Tuesday, the 24th of August.
Check out the Cadbury’s advert to get the idea of what’s involved. The brother teases his sister with a rubbish Rakhi present and so she rushes the blessing ceremony only to find that he has, in fact, got her a great big box of chocolates. She feels daft for having put paint all over his face. Nothing changes!
