Places to Visit on School / Bank Holidays: Hardraw Waterfall
Hardraw waterfall is the tallest single drop, above ground, waterfall in England. It is also the waterfall under which Kevin Costner’s bum double swam in front of Maid Marion in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The naked swim scene is famed for being the moment when Maid Marion first sees her future husband. The waterfall itself is situated behind the Green Dragon pub in Hardraw, Upper Wensleydale. Entry is £2 because the grounds are privately managed by the pub (not English Heritage or National Trust).
There are paths and bridges near the waterfall that lead to fantastic walks around this remote part of England. We recently spotted two owl chicks nearby and there are lots of rare birds in the area. The pub itself serves some of the best ale in the North and is frequented by members of CAMRA. There are many legends associated with the pub, not least the Olympic swimming pool in the cellar and the fire that burned for 200 years.
