Internet Outages Increase Production

Yet again, the decision to live and work from our new idyllic rural base has come back and bitten us on the arse as our laughably sporadic broadband supply has cut out for the second time in a week.As the providers, updaters and general managers of a number of database driven sites, we kind of need to be able to actually get online in order to administer to those sites. However, of late, these internet outages have had a silver lining: it forces us to do something offline.

So what can one actually do offline?

Write posts for blog(s)

There’s nothing to stop us writing blog posts while the wireless router shudders and blinks its useless lights. When our broadband supply arbitrarily reconnects, we’ll have something to post.

Improve Static Webpages

We do still have a few static pages, both our own and those that we’re working on for other people. These enforced periods of offline activity allow us to get on with long overdue facelifts on these pages, as we can get Dreamweaver cranked up for a bit of 2002 action.

Write a Book

Believe it or believe it not, one of the things on the current “To Do” list, for each of us, is to produce an ordinary book. The reason I am doing this is so that I have something to do and, importantly, something which makes me some money, while not on the internet. Eggs and baskets being the operative words here. I also like to think that I can write.

Watch the News

Despite my harping on about how most TV can be accessed over the internet, I can now appreciate that our decision to buy a television licence was not entirely wasted when I get to watch News 24 for ten minutes (at least as long as it takes for stories to start ‘repeating’) while waiting for the connection to go from “Local Only” to “Connected to the internet”.

Write a long blog post about how the internet isn’t working, and what to do when that occurs.

See above.
