Introducing Crispy - the Latest Big Night in Newcastle
As we often seem to, we’ve been in the right place at the right time to hear about a forthcoming attraction that is set to take the world by storm - this time it is a big night out, which launches in Newcastle next month, and goes by the name of Crispy.
This time, however, we didn’t have to travel to the other side of the world to get the details. We didn’t even have to leave our own doorstep, as it happens! A week ago, we decided to shake up the relative monotony of North Yorkshire Dales life by introducing an influx of under 50s, having a barbecue, and providing a few kegs of locally brewed ale on tap. This event was dramatically enhanced by the late inclusion of a DJ, who turned out to be extremely useful, by the name of Michael Collins.
Michael told us of his plans for a new night in Newcastle (our home of three years until 2006) which sounded interesting - particularly given the type of music we’ve been trying to promote on this very site over the past year or so.
On the night of our shindig, Michael’s musical choices and mixing skills proved absolutely spot on and, having now read his plans for the new Crispy venture, it would seem their new night can only be destined for greatness.
When we were in Newcastle, we found we gravitated towards World Headquarters where, as anyone who has ever been there will tell you, the musical choice is far from mainstream, and the atmosphere far more upbeat than most nightclubs, not only that, but the bass is loud, and the DJs are full of passion which resonates around the room. It would seem, from the Crispy plans, that they too are looking to move away from mainstream nightclub culture, and take things underground - this ain’t no Blu Bambu vibe. Here’s their mission:
Crispy is a new and vibrant dance music night which aims to tap into the underground music scene in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Crispy is founded by two DJs who have twelve years DJ experience between them.
That is, however, their executive summary, and it wouldn’t be fair to describe such a night with such language. Instead, go for the following description, which is far more evocative:
Crispy is a new monthly dance night emerging in Newcastle, founded by people who love and work with dance music in all its many forms. Our night is friendly and intimate, simply aiming to bring you local and national talent with our own particular flavour.
The music we love has shades of house, techno, breakbeat, electro, prog, tech, Chicago, Detroit, Berlin and Manchester. We want it dirty, original and jacking.
Our influences stem from every night we’ve heard a DJ play something we loved but had never heard before, from watching a room full of people absorbed in the music, from being seduced by a tune and feeling a bassline resonating deep in your chest, as well as your ears.
Born of endless nights spent in darkened, smoky rooms, worshipping a succession of repetitive beats under strobing, neon lights. We aim to please…
There isn’t much more to add to that, but if you’re interested in getting involved in the Crispy vibe ahead of time, then you should check out some of Michael’s Mixes that we scored by being “friends of friends”:
Leave it playing, turn your speakers up!
Now you can get ready for the special opening night which takes place on the simplest of dates to remember:
08.08.08
That’s right, the 8th day of the 8th month, of 2008 - AKA August 8th 2008 - or, in case you really can’t retain facts, the first day of this year’s Olympic Games in Beijing.
Where its happening:
The End, Scotswood Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7JH
The End is right by the Centre for Life (The End also used to be known as Rockies Bar), at town end of the Scottswood Road, on the junction of St James Boulevard, where it starts to get busy! If you still don’t know where I’m talking about, have a look at a map - its basically across the Redheugh bridge road from the Casino:
