Microsoft Unveils Brain-Chip for Facebook Users

Brain ChipMicrosoft has today unveiled ground-breaking technology that allows Facebook users to access their accounts, purely through the power of thought. The technology utilises advances in research used for the latest artificial limbs, which respond to electrical pulses emitted by the body’s nervous system.

Given the complexity of individual nervous systems, the chips currently cost around $80,000 and are not yet intended for the open market and are being tailored for a group of specially selected Facebook fans who are taking part in trials. However, many analysts argue it is “only a matter of time” before Microsoft releases a stable version of the chip for widespread sale.

A senior spokeman for Microsoft said today: “this is a really exciting technology. Those with chips will be able to poke their friends just by thinking about them. The ramifications of this development will be huge”.

Microsoft acquired a 1.6% stake in Facebook in 2007 for $240 million and have a vested interest in extending the reach of the social networking site. New sign-ups to social networking sites have seen a 5% slow in growth over the last few months and new technology, such as mobiles, i-phones and palm-tops are seen as essential to maintaining the popularity of these major investments.
