Monday 6th August –Mackay

After staying in the worst room of our trip, we left the cowboy town of Mackay for the rainforests of Finch Hatton Gorge. We walked to the beautiful Araluen Falls which would be suitable for a Bounty advert. On a recommendation from a work colleague, we sought out the Forest Fly zip line experience. Separate from the Flying Fox creek zip line –the Forest Fly is indicated by brown heritage signposts and is to be found along a separate road to the Araluen Falls.

Hosted by a couple from Yorkshire, we were treated to tree top views along the rainforest canopy courtesy of climbing harnesses, work gloves and a giant zip line. Our hosts introduced us to various items of bush tucker along the way including native flour, pepper and tree fern hearts. Our hosts also recommended the Eungella National Park for platypus sightings and we duly drove up the mountain. Not only did we spot a platypus, but we also saw several turtles moseying about the creek bed, covered in silt and sand. The park café was also a pleasant experience with the largest portions of chocolate cake I have ever experienced. Eungella National Park is well off the backpacker track, being mainly frequented by retirees.
