Oil Filled Radiators
Wow! Winter comes on faster than ever these days.
The clocks went back on Sunday, and all of a sudden the temperature has dropped below zero and we’re bracing ourselves for “wintry showers” and a high of minus four midweek. Its enough to make one wish Australia wasn’t but a memory!
But its sunny Britain for us for the time being and, now that our household renovation project is approaching something like completion, actually living in the newly plastered house for a winter is on the cards.
Heating has become all to real a problem now, as I’ve realised I’m unlikely every to re-acclimatise to the extreme temperatures in the North of England, and there’s a cold corridor that doesn’t have any central heating. With the help of our friendly local electrician, we have hooked up a suitable spot for an electric heater, and decided upon an Oil Filled Radiator to fill this spot, and keep the corridor (and surrounding bedrooms) warm overnight.
The great thing with these electric oild filled radiators is that they can in essence act like night storage heaters, due to the thermostat - you can keep a constant temperature which, depending on your electricity bills budget, can at least be somewhere above freezing!
Why am I writing such a rave review of a radiator that plugs in? Well, mainly because it only cost £15 to buy online from pixmania:
Use the link above to find the very same bargain basement radiator we ordered! There is an extra charge for delivery (about £10 from memory) but still, for less than £25 we can avoid the shivers at night.
Unfortunately, I’ve been informed that the above Oil Filled Radiator is out of stock! Looks like we emptied their supplies with our cold-hating ways! Here’s another one that is in stock, in two places:
- Oil Filled Radiator for £36.56 (plus £7 delivery) from Pixmania; or
- Get it for under £35 (including delivery) from Robert Dyas
That’s cheap in my view. Its a shame we haven’t convinced anyone to give us some free double glazing (rather difficult in listed buildings!) or to allow us to erect huge solar panels to soak up all three rays of sunshine we are due between now and summer 2009.
I was speaking to a friend of mine who said “its been winter since 2006″ anyway, so maybe we’ll need more of these radiators… or just to move back to a country where its warmer!

“Thousands of residents in Kelso endured a night of sub-zero temperatures as gas supplies to the area failed.
Engineers were working to restore gas to 3,000 homes in Kelso and 70 homes in the village of Ednam, after the supply failed on Monday morning.
A spokeswoman for the distribution company Scotia Gas Networks said it was unlikely the gas would be reinstated on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Grampian Police reported heavy snow on roads in the north east.” That from the BBC. For all those poor people freezing in Scotland because of the gas network - not to worry, just get an electric powered oil filled radiator!!
