Places to visit on school / bank holidays: Rievaulx Abbey

Rievaulx AbbeyRievaulx Abbey is hidden away between the North York Moors and Cleveland Hills near Sutton Bank. It is extortionate to get in so take some cash with you or plan to walk to the abbey. (£10.50 per car I seem to remember). We did get the audio tape tour to take with us though.

The abbey is really imposing once you drive there through rolling hills and fields and suddenly see this huge stone structure. The ruins are fantastic great big buildings. There are former waterways, massive arches and old tanneries. It’s a relaxing way to spend some time in the beautiful Cleveland Hills. It is possible to do an ultra long walk along the Cleveland Way. I cannot imagine how it must have been to walk here as a monk after only ever having seen small farm buildings in one’s life. It must have cost the Earth to build these things in the 1100’s.
