Rock Against Racism

Rock Against Racism CarnivalRock Against Racism was a movement formed in the 1970’s in reaction to rising xenophobia and racism fuelled by organisations like the National Front. At the time, David Bowie allegedly said that Britain was ready for a fascist leader and Eric Clapton made drunken comments at a concert telling the crowd to vote for Enoch Powell.

The most memorable Rock Against Racism event was the April 1978 “Carnival against the Nazis”. A huge rally of 100,000 people marched the six miles from Trafalgar Square through London’s East End – the heart of National Front territory – to a Rock Against Racism concert in Victoria Park, Hackney.

X-Ray Spex, The Clash, Steel Pulse, and Tom Robinson were on the bill – a diverse selection of music for a diverse multi-cultural crowd.

Today the Anti Nazi League is campaigning again in the name of Love Music Hate Racism – a demonstration of the positive energy of the music scene.

Love Music Hate Racism 2008

The LMHR  carnival has already passed. It was held on Sunday 27th April and played by Hard-Fi and The Good, The Bad & The Queen. The crowds were somewhat below the 100,000 record due to rain and many people wondered away from the speeches by Tony Benn and Ken Livingston – though others stayed and cheered.

  1. Racism is defined in the Concise Oxford dictionary as, briefly, the belief that one race is superior to another. What’s wrong with this belief, as long as it doesn’t lead to unacceptable treatment of allegedly “inferior” races? I believe that dogs are intellectually inferior to humans, but I wouldn’t dream of mistreating a dog.

Jews get far more Nobel Prizes per head of population compared to some other races. Are we supposed to pretend this statistic doesn’t exist?

  2. John, you seem to make an incredible leap there, which shows precisely what is wr4ong with a rascist attitude: just because one person, or a group of people from within a racial group happen to be “intellectually superior” or inferior, it does not necessarily follow that another person or group of people from within that racial group will share the same level of intellegence.

    Such a belief is irrational.

Probably more men have won Nobel Prizes than women, does this make them intellectually superior? Absolutely not, it merely demonstrates the unequal society which has been predominant since they invented Nobel prizes.

I find your incongruous “dog” analogy puzzling and offensive. It indicates a disdain for other cultures which is not based in fact. Perhaps you cannot find a more compelling argument to back up your (lack of) rationale because there is none?
