Russell Brand & Jonathan Ross - What Did They Say??

Find out exactly what Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross said that got them into BIG trouble with the BBC - if you enjoy this story, consider sharing it with your friends on Facebook etc, by pressing the Green “Share This” button at the bottom (they’ll want to know too! Click here to Share on Facebook).

It’s been discussed on the news on TV, on Radio and in the papers. Today, this came up in parliament too. Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand have both now been suspended by the BBC for their prank gone bad, but what exactly did they say?

UPDATE - in a massive overreaction by all concerned, Jonathan Ross has been suspended without pay for 12 weeks. Russell Brand resigned from the BBC indefinitely. The Radio 2 Controller has resigned. The Daily Mail sold three extra copies (not actually verified). Click here to have a look at the Facebook Group to reinstate Ross & Brand (may involve complaining to the BBC about mishandling this debacle).

The messages were left by Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross on Andrew Sachs’ answerphone.

This video should answer any questions you might have had! Be warned - Jonathan Ross uses the ‘F’ word once and the general chat is probably not child safe, so use your headphones, or point your children at something warm and fluffy for a few minutes while you watch this.

It is quite painful listening. In fact, I think even Russell Brand feels they’ve overstepped the mark, but Ross seems to egg him on a little. Anyhow, here is the second video of the pairs words:

Update - Brand & Rossgate - a Transcript

After the number of complaints over this incident passed the 30,000 mark - I never knew there were so many puritans in the UK - and Noel Gallagher slating “the British” delayed outrage (I agree with his sentiments, by the way - only 2 people complained on the night of the show TWO!!!), we thought we should put up the transcript of exactly what was said so you can judge for youselves while listening to, or even after listening to the videos above.

We got this transcript and order of events from the BBC’s great page all about this incident (which they are handling about as well as all of the previous “mountain out of molehills” newspaper stories… Angus Deaton, Richard Bacon, etc etc):

The show is broadcast between 2100 and 2300 BST. It opens with this warning: “The next programme contains some strong language which some listeners may find offensive.” Early in the show, Ross jokes about an interview planned with Sachs telling Brand that “I had a go on his daughter” would be “the sort of thing you’d say”.

Brand replies that he knows Sachs’ granddaughter - 23-year-old Georgina Baillie - and says she has visited his home and that she is a member of “a baroque dance group called the satanicsluts.com”.

He continues: “She always said to me, ‘don’t mention that to my granddad Manuel’, and now here we are.

“So when we talk to Manuel, don’t mention that his granddaughter’s a satanic slut.”

After it emerges that Sachs will not now be in the show due to unforeseen circumstances, listeners hear Brand and Ross leave four messages on the actor’s voicemail.

Here are extracts from those messages:

Message one: As Brand begins to leave a message, Ross blurts out: “He fucked your granddaughter… I’m sorry I apologise. Andrew, I apologise, I got excited, what can I say - it just came out.

Brand replies: “Andrew Sachs, I did not do nothing with Georgina - oh no, I’ve revealed I know her name. Oh no, it’s a disaster.”

Ross goes on to say: “If he’s like most people of a certain age, he’s probably got a picture of his grandchildren when they’re young right by the phone. So while he’s listening to the messages, he’s looking at a picture of her about nine on a swing…”

Message two: “Andrew, this is Russell Brand. I’m so sorry about the last message, it was part of the radio show - it was a mistake.”

Ross adds: “It might be true but we didn’t want to break it to you in such a harsh way.”

Brand goes on to say: “No, I’m sorry, I’ll do anything. I wore a condom. Put the phone down. Oh, what’s going to happen?”

Message three: The message opens with Ross saying: “She was bent over the couch…”

Brand then improvises a song which includes the lines: “I said some things I didn’t of oughta, like I had sex with your granddaughter…”

Message four: Brand opens the message with: “Alright Andrew Sachs’ answerphone? I’m ever so so sorry for what I said about Andrew Sachs.”

“Just say sorry,” adds Ross,

“I’ll kill you,” says Brand laughing.

“Don’t say you’ll wear him as a hat - just say sorry,” continues Ross.

“Sorry, right,” adds Brand.

  1. Poor Russell, he simply hints about respecting Sach’s “progeny” and then Jonathan mutters in the background “he f%&cked his granddaughter”. It is funny but I would say that the offence was Jonathan Ross’ fault. However, neither of them should have rung back so many times. It sounds like they’re both high or something because they’re so hyperactive and giggly.

They’ve both been in the game long enough to know they wouldn’t get away with all the swearing. I think it’s a conspiracy by the BBC to make headlines and show they’re tough on bad behaviour because the producer should have stopped them ringing back so many times.

  2. Rusell quit, Jonathan pleeds for his job. Great. Some parts were funny, really funny but I think they took it to far by ringing him as many times as they did. I would have loved for them to reing John Cleese, I think John Cleeses response would have been so much funnier than theirs, something like “I sodomized your father” would have been funny.

Anyway, I don’t think they’re punishment is fully deserved but I hope to see them back working together some time soon, they make a good double act over radio.

  3. There have now been over 20,000 complaints to the BBC - why are they complaining? Is it the language used (not broadcast)? Is it the general tone? Do they just like complaining? Or, do they genuinely believe Brand & Ross should be sacked?

If the question is whether or not their behaviour is worthy of sacking - it wasn’t. They were crass and stupid, but that’s their job, right? As long as they apologise to the injured parties (that isn’t us - nor is it the 20,000 who phoned up to register their complaints), I would consider the matter at an end.

If your twelve year old son made a prank call, you wouldn’t expect him to be expelled from school.

Not that I’m comparing this pair with twelve year olds - they have a far younger mental age than that!

That was a joke before I get any complaints.

  4. I agree. I heard that it wasn’t even live, so the people who decided to broadcast it are to blame just as much as Ross & Brand. I also agree that it was Ross who started the situation. There was nothing bad or unworthy in the call until Jonathan intercepted and said what he did.

  5. i think everybody should stop talking about them all did was leave a couple stupied prank call with alot of people do with their ex’s and people should be talking about why people are still fighten a piontless war .

  6. Julian Clary - !! Said he was f*sting Norman Lamont ooo Shock horror..Now its all forgotten about. Ii hear kids under 10 swearing every day, kids under 16 are having sex and kids every day also… Jeez I wonder how many people who complained about Ross and Brad are Racists - Chauvanists - swear every day - have stolen from others - had affairs - divorced .. This is stupid and i’m already fed up hearing about it.. People are dying in this world for more important reasons ..Lets just get rid of the BBC I could do with saving £12 quid a month with this credit crunch

  7. Incredible!!! It’s just humour. Bad taste or not…that’s all it is. Other celebrities in the past have faced much worse. Remember what Spitting Image used to do? If you want stars who are known foe alternative humour, don’t be suprised when they use alternative humour!!!!!!!

  8. I agree with all of you! That’s why we showed what was actually said in context.

  9. His Grandaughter is fit though !

  10. i think russell and jonathan are really funny and this doesn’t surprise me with what they did, i don’t want them off the air but they did take a step to far and if i was sachs i wouldn’t be impressed.
bbc shouldn’t of aired it either.
but at the end of the day they have apologised and sachs has accepted it why can’t it just be left now?

  11. Maybe because the papers won’t let it drop - there’s a lot of mileage in this story. Unfortunately for newspapers, videos and audio files are a much better way to demonstrate - I’d bet most of the complainers are Mail (etc) readers who never even listened to this.

  12. Well thank you for actually giving people a chance to listen and decided for themselves.
    Right i have some points to make;
Firstly Brand and Ross are known for their alternative humour and its a bit like a person with a yeast allergy going out to eat at pizza hut, why go there if its not for you?
secondly why is it always that we are so quick to damm people why are we not comparing all the great broadcasting and charity work that in particular Ross has done with this one slip?
Thirdly if he had been present and if it were on Ross’ friday show it would have been thought to be hillarious.
fourth point why listen? If i got crank answer phone messages id delete and ignore.
fith point its actually the grand daughter who is got at let her respond.
sixth point i have heard far worse language used on other broadcasts its not like they were on the cebeebies channel suggesting children should chew scissors.
and finally all of these complaints? i’m not sure did they all listen to the show do they know for sure what was said?
Yes don’t crank call don’t over do the swearing but then warn and axe ramsey his language is worse. I also saw teenage embarrasing bodies tonight full nudity and graphic scenes far more shocked at 9pm to be seeing a teenage girls vagina while she stands right in front of the camera. Hmmm suddenly i fucked your grand daughter doesnt seem that bad????
    Ok rant over x

  13. I have a useful quote that you could reel off to all the shocked Mail readers in instances such as this, it goes “If you don’t like profanity, you don’t like the truth. If you don’t like the truth, watch how you vote.”

  14. As I say on my blog, it’s a predictable response from the BBC, concerned about all the complaints from Middle England’s wifeswappers. Personally I’m more offended by Eastenders and Strictly Come Dancing.

  15. Isn’t Georgina Baillie a boob model who was in The Sun amongst other quality papers?
Isn’t Max Clifford now handling her (no pun intended)
He gets on quite well with the papers.
A symbionic relationship, they sell papers, the “stars” he manages get publicity for non-stories, he makes money and all the petty minded dim wits with nothing better to do with their time get a bandwagon to jump on.
    Everyone wins.
Oh except the actual stars that these parasites leech off and anyone who values free speech
I am not happy to see less of these two genuinely funny people
I have a lot of respect for Jonathan and Russell; they are two good men.
I have a lot of respect for Andrew Sachs he has behaved like a gentleman through this.
I do not have a lot of respect for Georgina Baillie and Max and his band of Nazis can kiss my arse.

  16. Russel brand is cool! Jonathon was egging russel on! Grr i dont like jonathon

  17. Brand was like a helpless manic puppet on the end of his Ross’s strings. Ross was the ringmaster and has a hugely inflated sense of his owm importance which is lot of his appeal. Both of them are talented when it comes to their brand (no pun intended) of humour. But they do cross the line - I’ll never forget the deeply disturbed expression on Jimmy Carr’s face when Carr was sitting on Ross’s knee on his Friday night show. Ross told him he had ‘a lovely warm anus’. So it’ll do them both good to get a slapping. Anyway it’s still all in good fun. Listening to the carnage unfold put a smile on my face anyway and it’s not like the lads will be made homeless.

  18. What silly boys! Jonathon is a an outsize schoolboy, and Russell is
a twerp, although they do not deserve to be in as much trouble as they are. The BBC is to blame as they have let them both get away with bad language and lewdness for too long.
I hope both of them return to television and radio before too long, although they are naughty boys, they will be sadly missed.

  19. This joke would have had the same effect if they had simply pretended to call Andrew Sachs! Anj expensive mistake for all concerned. I don’t think it warrants discussion by politicians, however, and there’s no need for everyone to fall on their swords.

  20. Also, thanks to everyone for leaving such sensible comments - I’m glad we’ve attracted a better class of commenter here.

I read the “Heat” page on this and it was full of incoherent txt-speak stuff.

Refreshing to discover some people who can form an opinion and express it!

  21. Very funny - unless you are Georgina! It will all blow over for the two ‘funny guys’ but she will probably be stuck with this for life and let’s face it - who ever wants to be reminded that they sunk so low as to have sex with such a low life as Brand.

  22. [...] another media star has fallen from grace very publicly, last week we had Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross behaving strangely, and this week saw Kerry Katona’s worrying performance on ITV’s This Morning [...]

  23. Overpaid idiots - infantile, stupid, slanderous, need to be sacked. Why are the Beeb paying that twerp Ross £18 million to be an overgrown schoolboy. Thank you for providing this to listen to. I wondered what all the fuss was about and have now been able to form my own opinion. I never had much time for both of them - don’t find either of them funny. They are too keen on the sound of their own voices. I think they must have been drinking. The girl involved is no advert for her grandfather either.
