Saturday 18th August –Mount Isa to Wauchope
Today we crossed the state border between Queensland and the Northern Territory. Almost immediately we became aware of the nothingness of the NT tableland. Long sandy grass and occasional trees stretch for as far as the eye can see and careful planning has to go into fuel stops. At one point we spotted a feral cat but that was it for several hundred kilometers.
The Devils Marbles were marked on our map and as the sun went down we visited the area as a prospective place to camp. Although the rocks themselves were stunningly beautiful, the indigenous ghost stories we read on the information bay put us off sleeping there. A female elder talks of a sprite of some description playing with her as a child but not letting her leave and so her mother had to rescue her. She says the spirits of the place are kind but would make a human go mad. She tells of her cousin going missing in the area, never to return. The women of the area performed ceremonies to try to make the rocks release her cousin, but were unsuccessful.
