Sydney’s National Park and the Mardi Gras
The best national park accommodation we have stayed in!
The National Park near Lane Cove and North Ryde on Delhi Road is hard to find but well worth a stay. There is a bus straight into the city from the end of the road and so you can avoid the extortionate rates charged for accommodation in Sydney. We found Maze to be overpriced to say there are no plug sockets in the room, no tea and coffee facilities and all facilities are shared. The National Park has showers, two camp kitchens, laundry facilities and a camp shop.
We ally landed on Sydney for the biggest event of the city’s social calendar -the Mardi Gras. Each year, thousands of people descend onto the capital of NSW for a parade designed to show community support for its gay and lesbian members. The parade was a fantastic show of dancing, fireworks, music and political messages. I was most touched by the family and friends float (PFLAG), which included a lady carrying a sign saying “Proud Mum of a Gay Son”. The police and other emergency services each had their own marches. By far the most spectacular group were the “Kylie” marchers, succeeded by a tiny “Danii” contingent holding a placard “I can sing too!”. Afterwards, we walked all the way home across the Sydney Harbour Bridge -a fitting end to a grand night.
