The Big Drive Begins - Leg 1 The Great Ocean Road

I am using dial up internet at a campsite as i write this so I’ll keep things brief.

We set off today on an indefinite drive, and began with the Great Ocean Road. This is a road which we have heard a lot about from various people, including my mum and dad who travelled it last ear when they visited for a month. Considering how much it has been hyped, it certainly had a lot to live up to - even when we went up the Rialto Tower in Melbourne, we were subjected to a 20 inute vido which “bigged up” the Great Ocean Road.

Is it worth the hype?

As we cruised down in our newly kitted out Pajero, it at first appeared to be a fairly nondescript road, and it was only after we went through Anglesea (a great British name…) that things began to look up. Massively. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful roads on earth. Many Aussies say it is better than the one in California, that is on all of the films, and from what we’ve seen it probably is - though we’ve only seen a small amount, it is definitely good so far.
I’ve taken some good photos, and will get them up when we find a more speedy way to get online!

  1. Enjoy your drive- we did. Make sure to save some money and visit Chris’s restaurant - best in the world I’ve been to. Turn right just before Apollo Bay and climb mountain - turning is signposted on righthand side, climb dirt road up to Chris’s past a holiday cabin place… enjoy all. Don’t forget to hold you hats on at Twelve Apostles - dad lost his Canadian baseball cap there… v v windy.

Take a side trip to the Fly, treetop walkway inland a little.

Don’t miss camping at the koala site.

Enjoy the shipwreck coast! Warmanbool is good, too. xxx

  2. Warnambool I meant…
