The Otway Fly, Victoria, Australia

The Otway Fly was described to us as “one of the better paid attractions in Victoria” by Julian. This honest appraisal made us prepared to pay the $38 entry fee for both of us.

As we had camped in the Beech Forest within the Otways National Park the previous night, we had already seen a lot of the local rainforest, but the Otway Fly does offer a unique perspective, being a canopy walk. There are only three such canopy walks in the world, and all of them are in Australia. In fact, those of you who watched “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here” on ITV in the UK wil be familiar with one of the others. The Otway Fly is quite similar. Just without the two moronic grinning geordies…

birds-eye-view-of-mountain-ash-otway-fly.jpgBoth of us had seen more impressive trees on the days before (for free) and I would suggest venturing into the rainforest proper whether you visit the Otway Fly or not - but that is not to say don’t go to the Otway Fly. The high tower sways and you really get the feeling of height that is such a factor of these forests. For example, the mighty mountain ashes here can grow up to 100 metres in height, and you can see them, from nearer the top, on the raised platforms. The surrounding bush is also very beautiful and most of the abundant local specimins can be found here.

One small gripe is the golf buggy that drives around ferrying people up and down the short path to the start of the canopy walk. It is a scenic walk, with many of the sights, and sounds, that are present in the local rainforest, however, being mown down by a noisy vehicle is not a feature of bush that I would pay to appreciate…
