Rob, when you mentioned 'social marketing' I thought you got it right with Paris. But alas.

Here is why Paris is popular:
chartreuse.wordpress.com/2006/09/18/why-paris-hilton-is-famous-or-understanding-value-in-a-post-madonna-world/

(sorry, bad link to avoid being spam-detected).

In short, Paris is the social marketing model: she is popular, mentions others, connects with others and others promote her, too.

Overall, though, it is quite disheartening to know she's the most searched phrase, but you can't expect everyone to search for Johann Strauss Jr, right?

Cheers.

Please remember to email your friends (assuming that you have their email addresses, unlike me), you could use something similar to this:

Hi,

I found a site that's doing an experiment trying to right the balance that has led to Paris Hilton being the most searched for phrase on Google.

The experiment is to get the page http://www.24hourtrading.co.uk/blog/?p=42 to the top of the world's search engines for the term "Paris Hilton" using popular social networking sites, blogs and personal websites.

All you have to do is this:

1. Log into Bebo, MySpace, Friends Reunited or whatever you like/use - as long as it has a BLOG function on it, or there is some way for you to create an internet HYPERLINK on it.
2. Write some stuff about Paris Hilton, if you can be bothered, AS LONG AS YOU provide a link to THIS PAGE (http://www.24hourtrading.co.uk/blog/?p=42) with the words: "The Great Paris Hilton Experiment (Paris Hilton the idiot, not the hotel)"… Just like that.
3. Tell all your friends on MySpace, Bebo etc to do the same on their blog pages, as well as going onto theirs and doing the same (as long as you know they won’t mind :) )
4. Email your mates telling them about “The Great Paris Hilton Experiment (Paris Hilton the idiot, not the hotel)” and detailing the above, send them to this page if you like and ask if they can forward it on to their friends!
5. That’s It… Sit back and wait for the results.

If you have a personal website or blog, use that to link to the page if you like, and change the link words if you want (as long as it contains "Paris Hilton").

If you need help writing hyperlinks (there's usually a button with a chain on it to do them on the popular sites) ask a friend, or email paris_hilton_experiment@24hourtrading.co.uk and ask them how to do this. You can email that address to show your support, or go to the site listed at the top, register, and leave a comment.

As soon as the phrase "Paris Hilton" starts bringing people to the page, The Great Paris Hilton (Paris Hilton the idiot, not the hotel) web page will be updated with details.

If you don't want to, or can't be arsed, no worries, sorry to have bothered you! Tell your friends either way and we'll keep Paris where she belongs, in number 2.

Best regards,
