What to do When Embedded Youtube Videos Stop Working

Today we checked our usual websites and noticed that the videos were not displaying in Firefox. I found a really useful thread here and a really good explanation here. The culprit seems to be IPv6 which can be uninstalled. It turns out we’re not the only ones struggling with our embedded Youtube videos.

This is a handy checklist to go through before you panic properly:

- Check Youtube - it is very occassionally down for maintenance. You can find out if it is by checking their site or the plethora of handy fora (forums).

-Try viewing your site in a different browser - Firefox or Explorer. Most programs and sites are designed for Explorer rather than Firefox. Viewing our site in Explorer rather than Firefox showed the websites up fine.

- Try viewing your site from another machine - your usual programs may have stopped working, especially if you have to “system restore” constantly in order to get Windows Vista working. We realised our site was ok when I tried viewing the videos myself on a different computer and they were fine.

- Check your posts (if using content management software). If the version of content management which you use has been updated, the old embed codes may have to be input in a different way. If using Wordpress, try changing from “flash embed” to inputting youtube embed codes directly into the html viewer (click the code button before and after inputting it).

-If these hints are no use, google “youtube embed videos not working” - I did!
