Working in Sydney
I have been temping for a cable engineers company for the last two weeks. Although I’m in accounts and it’s unbearably quiet, there are perks. Typical Aussies -we get a beer at 4:30pm today (this happens every week) and since it’s the end of the month there is unlimited beer and food. We have a bit of a soiree with the engineers downstairs and limber up for the weekend. They also have dress down Fridays here, which is a bit 1997, but I like it since I only have 4 outfits for work.
The whole thing is a doss, you might say, but it takes me 1hr15 to get across Sydney every morning and evening. I must note that this is not due to the perfectly adequate transport system, which Sydneysiders constantly bemoan, but because I live in an awkward location. The next two working weeks will only be 4 days long though, since it’s Easter.
However, I may have to concede that this gig is a doss after all, because every week for about 2 days, the accountants have to freeze the databases while they process payments. This limits the amount of work I can do to about 40 minutes of scanning and e-mailing per day. Hence, I can work on our new website (www.Your-Story.org) whilst legitimately doing nothing. Nobody can protest except by cancelling my contract which is, admittedly, an extravagence on the part of the company.
Oh the wonders of agency work!
