Working in Sydney
This morning was quite surreal. I set off to work on foot acrosss Pyrmont Bridge about 7:30am. Already I had to put my sunnies on because of the dawning light and felt very Australian in the process. No coat, not a tie or jacket in sight and sunglasses to blot out the sun.
Darling Habour is overshadowed by towering temples to international capitalism. Corporate skyscrapers surround the small bay and cast large shadows over the bustling commuters. I felt almost sneaky using my legs to walk for free, instead of buying a ticket for the train.
I sniggered as, all around me, Very Important People jogged, cycled and ran to their Very Important Jobs. Australian business dress is so casual, though, that it brought the realisation to me that I am on a foreign continent in a very different country, yet making a life for myself. In the last few days, Rob and I have acquired a home, jobs and new friends. Yet, home is never far away. My recruitment consultant is from Sheffield!
